Discovering good movies, one bad movie at a time

Howdy, Kingdom of AE! Back in late March, I had the pleasure of sitting down with art-history-scholar-turned-Broadway-producer-turned-film-director Grant S. Johnson, whose indie spy thriller Agent Game hits theaters on April 8.

Agent Game is the conspiracy-laden tale of a CIA interrogation wrong, starring a motley crew of fascinating actors, from Katie Cassidy to Barkhad Abdi to Mel Gibson. CIA officer Harris (Dermot Mulroney) is involved in missions to detain and relocate foreign nationals for interrogation. When Harris’ superior (Jason Isaacs) is murdered, he finds himself the scapegoat for the killing of a detainee (Barkhad Abdi) and must run from a team of operatives sent to bring him in (Adan Canto, Katie Cassidy, Rhys Coiro), led by a ruthless double agent (Annie Ilonzeh).

Grant’s previous two films, Frat Stars and Nighthawks, were a dark comedy and a gritty mystery respectively, and he continues his genre-hopping with his third time in the director’s chair.

Grant and I discuss his theatre career, his love of classic art and how it influences his movies, and how he accidentally fulfilled a lifelong dream for Jason Isaacs.
