Discovering good movies, one bad movie at a time

Hello Alternate Ending community! This is my first piece of content for the site that Rob, Carrie, and Tim built, and I couldn’t be happier to present an interview I had with Iuli Gerbase, the writer/director of The Pink Cloud, which had its global debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The film opened in New York City on January 14th, and is opening in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Monica Film Center and additional select markets on Friday, January 21st.

I knew nothing about The Pink Cloud going into my first watch, and I’m thankful that was the case. My reaction to its first ten or so minutes ranged from “why are you telling us this…?” to “oh, holy crap, that’s prophetic!” Both this discussion and my review of the film remain spoiler-free. But if you wanted to check it out first before diving into this content, I would understand.

In my interview with Gerbase, we discuss her inspirations for The Pink Cloud, how she and her Director of Photography, Bruno Polidoro, designed the cloud itself, the thought process behind the primary characters (especially Giovana), what she hopes viewers take from her film, what projects she has her eyes on next, and a little bit more. Plus, we allude to a slew of other cool movies, ranging from Under the Skin to Scenes from a Marriage.

Gerbase knows her stuff and shows some really exciting formal skills. It’s always great to explore the feature debut of a gifted filmmaker, and I can’t wait for her next project!

If you’re not familiar with her already, please allow me the pleasure to introduce Iuli Gerbase, the writer/director of The Pink Cloud.
