There’s carbon in them thar comets.
I am clearly unqualified to discuss origin-of-life theories, but I think that in this country, right now, any remotely plausible scientific theory is a good thing to have. I do not know if the idea that life began from spatial bombardments is necessarily more sensible than Darwin’s “warm little pond” as a source of all the building blocks of life (the Romantic in me prefers the latter, oddly enough), but at least it’s not a Big Beard in the Sky or a Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Beyond the political ramifications, of course, it’s just really fucking cool to me that we’re ramming washing machines into comets. Because I am a tool about space exploration.
Oh, and NASA? Deep Impact? Seriously?
