MORE FUN WITH ALITO

I haven’t been able to follow the Alito hearings in the last 24 hours, but here’s a fairly substantial summary from firedoglake. And, just on general principles, SCOTUSblog has as much info as you could want without reading the actual transcript.

Based on what I’ve gleaned this morning, it seems like there’s some cause for optimism on the anti-Alito front. Apparently the Democrat senators kept digging at the issue of presidential authority yesterday, and not getting the answers they wanted to hear. So we might be looking at the possibility of a filibuster. If even a crytpo-Republican like Joe Lieberman is floating the possibility, it almost goes without saying that the Dems can gather the necessary votes to keep it alive for at least a little while. As to the possibility of the nuclear option, I think it becomes much less likely in view of the general dissatisfaction Americans have right now with the more radical elements of the right-wing.

Hopefully I will be able to keep up with the news today, although it promises to be the least exciting yet – hearing testimonials from witnesses, and all that.
