The White House lied to us about New Orleans. They knew about the levees breaking the night before they claimed to.
On one level, I’m just tempted to sigh this off. After all, it’s not like I’m even slightly surprised by it. And at some point about a year ago, I had a massive attack of outrage fatigue, and I simply can’t get angry any more when the administration does something like this – it’s tiring. At this point, I’m often guilty of the sin of covering my ears and shutting my eyes and hoping that “only” a couple thousand more people die on this man’s watch.
But as I read the NYT piece, something came back. To see all of the colossal failures of the administration and FEMA lined up in one neat place like that is soul-crushing. And once again, I’m just blindly angry at the culture of incompetence and cronyism and anti-reason that allowed this to happen.
I have to throw my hat in at this point with everyone who’s wondering if Bush actually knew about any of this. We know that the White House “protects” him from certain unpleasant information, and I can easily imagine that this would fall into that category. The sad thing is, there are probably people who take comfort in that thought. I hate this fucking president.
