July: AE Happenings

We’re now 1 year, 6 months and 7 days (give-or-take) into the venture we embarked on to marry Tim’s wonderful (read: delicately cynical) movie review blog with the landing page for our film/married people podcast.  As the ole’ adage goes, the first year is the hardest, right?  It’s actually not been that hard, Tim and I mostly agree on everything and Rob sends us lots of emails about website ideas and podcast stuff that we don’t read.

Anyway, when we first launched the new site, there was an abundance of kinks to iron out and we wanted to make sure it was cleaned up before layering on a bunch of new stuff.

But now here we are, less kinky, and we wanted to share some changes we’re really excited about!

New Contributors:

Be on the look-out for a few new faces on the site (we’re so excited about this one!).  If you’re a podcast listener, you’ll know it’s important to us that every type of movie-goer has a voice.  So, expect to see varied content, from casual to critical.  We also intend to feature guests on the podcast – the vote’s out on who is going to be the more awkward interviewer between Tim and I.

Members Corner:

We recently added a space on the site for Patreon supporters.  We hope you find this to be much more accessible for your bonus content (spoiler episode shorts, early release of reviews, Tim dramatically reading vulgar prose, etc.)  We appreciate you supporting AE!

Writer’s Workshop:

One of the questions we often get here at AE is, “I’m trying to break into the film critic game, can you give me advice on my writing?” And the answer is usually “We’re so sorry but schedules are crazy, but we wish we could!”, but for a limited time, that’s going to change. We’re currently offering a first-come, first-served opportunity to get some writing feedback from Tim, other newbie writers, and the whole of Alternate Ending commentariat, as part of an online writing workshop.

Here’s how it works. Between now and August 15th, the first ten people who pledge $10/month for 12 months on our Patreon site will be invited to write a short essay on a film-related topic of your choosing, with guidance from the three of us. Your complete draft will then be shared with the other participating writers via e-mail, and you’ll be able to offer feedback as well as receive it from a wide variety of different perspectives and voices. Finally, we’ll invite you to release your new essay into the wilds of our site, where you’ll get to enjoy a trial by fire as your writing gets picked apart and analyzed by a sharp, highly engaged community of commentators.

This offer is highly contingent on our respective schedules, so it’s not going to be around long! If you want to know more, please reach out to us at contact@alternateending.com for details.

Nasty July:

The much-beloved Summer of Blood, Tim’s long-running tour of the history of horror movies, remains in its unquiet grave for another year, but there has to be some of blood-splattering going on ’round these parts to help us pass the long summer months. Tim will be spending the next few weeks returning to the notorious Video Nasties list of the 1980s, the UK’s hit list of movies likely to deprave and corrupt an entire generation.

As an added bonus to our Patreon subscribers, these reviews will be made available a week early.  The first one comes this Saturday, so if you just can’t wait a whole week, now’s the time to subscribe!

Sappy sidenote:

Thanks to all of you, for making this such a fun place to hang out. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s a “movie-people-thing” or a “Tim-blog-reader-thing”, but you’re all so funny.  Funny, like a clown, funny…

As always, please share your feedback contact@alternateending.com – we love to hear from you!

Fist bumps,

Tim, Rob and Carrie
