FRIDAY RANDOM TEN: WHITHER ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT? EDITION

Has it really been nine weeks since my last FRT? I think it has.

1. “Glory Days,” Bruce Springsteen, 1984. Pretty cheesy, but not 80’s cheesy…more like 70’s rock cheesy a decade late. I love it anyway. 5/10

2. “Locket Love,” Ramones, 1977. A certain mentality holds that the Ramones are emblematic of the theoretically coolest possible music. I do not share that mentality. It is, however, my favorite track off of Rocket to Russia. 7/10

3. “Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea,” Johnny Cash, 1996. Gets the automatic Cash 7/10 minimum, but not much else.

4. “The Laws Have Changed,” The New Pornographers, 2003. I always forget…are they really cool, or just silly and fun? Having recently dug the hell out of them live, I shall presume the former. And a great track: “Introducing for the first time, Pharoah on the microphone.” Priceless. 8/10

5. “Oh!” Sleater-Kinney, 2002. It would be cooler if I weren’t a white man, but whatever. 7/10

6. “Nightingale,” The Eagles, 1972. Eagles album track. Presented without comment. 1/10

7. “All of You,” Ella Fitzgerald, 1956. From The Cole Porter Songbook. It really doesn’t get any better. I swear I didn’t cheat to get it in after the Eagles. 10/10

8. “A Well Respected Man,” The Kinks, 1966. Following the rules of Official Insufferable Music Snob Amanda, automatic 7, and this is a good enough song to swing 8/10, I do think.

9. “See You,” Foo Fighters, 1997. Meh. 5/10

10. “This Song,” Badly Drawn Boy, 2000. I adore the track, but I don’t know…is BDB actually cool, or just kind of nerdy? I mean, now he just sucks, but back then? 5/10

Average: 5.3/10. I’m not about to complain – a fucking Eagles album cut made it onto that list. I should be grateful I broke 5.

Bonus Track: “Grand Canyon,” The Magnetic Fields, 1999. Oh sure, now with the fucking 69 Love Songs, asshole iTunes. I swear, the only time I can go five tracks without hitting that album is doing the FRT.
