FRIDAY RANDOM TEN: COLD SEASON EDITION

Another day off work, another “slept in ’til 11:30” sort of morning. I hate being sick.

1. “Send a Picture of Mother,” Johnny Cash, 1968. From At Folsom Prison. And a pretty good representative of that album, too. 7/10

2. “Flying,” The Beatles, 1967. Wow. Maybe the worst thing they ever recorded. 1/10

3. “Back to School,” Spencer Bates, 2003. I suppose I knew it would happen sooner or later…if you don’t know Spencer, I’m not going to bother explaining. Just…just. 0/10

4. “Comfortably Numb,” Pink Floyd, 1979. From the ridiculous to the sublime. My favorite track off The Wall. 7/10

5. “Walk Idiot Walk,” The Hives, 2004. God, I do not know what possessed me to buy this album. But this is probably the best track the band recorded, such as it is. The worst of post-punk punk. 5/10

6. “Yours and Mine,” Fountains of Wayne, 2003. Meh. Too short to do anything interesting (62 seconds), and full of that characteristic FoW teenager-friendly alt-rock. 4/10

7. “I’m Old Fashioned,” Ella Fitzgerald, 1963. From The Jerome Kern Songbook. There are great songs on this album, but this isn’t among them. Still, it’s Ella. 8/10

8. “Tired Eyes,” Neil Young, 1975. Even by the harsh standards of Tonight’s the Night, this is a pretty tough song. Proof, perhaps, of why Neil should avoid dirges, but there’s something weirldy effective about it. 7/10

9. “Night Game,” Paul Simon, 1975. I love the man, but it’s a boring fucking song about baseball. 4/10

10. “Remember,” John Lennon, 1970. I’ve always adored Plastic Ono Band, but I understand the mentality that it’s an example of the most irksome of early 70’s introspection rock. Whatever. Although it’s far from the album’s best song. 6/10

Average: 4.9/10

Bonus Track: “Sophisticated Lady,” Ella Fitzgerald, 1957.
