FEELING THE ILLINOISE

One of my more pointless posts ever, given that the North American leg of the tour is almost over, but this evening I saw one of the better concerts I’ve been to, as Sufjan Stevens brought his Illinois promotional tour to…Illinois.

The show was comprised entirely of music from his new album, which didn’t surprise me overmuch, and it certainly didn’t disappoint me, either, as said album is probably the best thing I’ve heard in 2005. I’d heard from some people that his early shows in this tour were lifeless and awkward, and I’m willing to believe that. But he got over it. The music isn’t exactly the hardest-rocking out there (“Palisades” dance remix, anyone?), but he did a good job bringing the layers of the album into a live setting. What really made the show soar, though was his band, the Illinoisemakers, who were all dressed as U of I cheerleaders. It was a really magnificent show, and if you find yourself in one of the 11 cities he’s yet to play in, it’s definitely worth a peek.

Added bonus, Laura Veirs was the opening act. I’d never heard her work, though I knew of her, and I was quite pleasantly surprised. Much like Sufjan, her forte appears to be airy neo-folk, which is perfectly wonderful to my way of thinking. Altogether worth seeking out if you like lyrically adventurous songs with simple, placid melodies.

But enough yammering about music, something I know nothing about. I promise, when next I write, it will be from Florida.

Quick interjection; I know a few people wanted copies of the movie (free if you promise to buy me a drink sometime, free + shipping if you’re overseas), and I hope to get those out in the first few days I get back. But for some of you, especially those who are no longer on this continent, I don’t have your e-mail. Mine is what it always was, so e-mail me with your address, etc. For some of you, especially those I used to live with who have since moved to L.A., I’m just lazy. But send me your mailing adress again. Sorry.

No! Seriously! Florida!

(Flight’s in 4 hours…good Christ…I shan’t be sleeping for about 18).
