Last time: a classic, tearjerking film about a young woman. Next time: a classic, tearjerking film about an old man. Although the tears in Goodbye, Mr. Chips are of a completely different sort. In this case, it’s the kind of sweet sadness that comes from watching a life well-lived, and knowing that even the best of us – especially the best of us – are gone too soon. Robert Donat won an Oscar for playing the title character, and it was among the best choices the Academy ever made in the acting categories.
