Gunga Din

For the second entry in our year-long celebration of the films of cinema’s annus mirabilis, 1939: George Steven’s rollicking, racist epic Gunga Din. My review is coming Sunday, February 22nd, so everyone has two weeks to find a copy, watch it, and prepare their thoughts.

“Hey, Tim,” you might say, “what the hell is it with all the Cary Grant action-adventure flicks? They’re great and all, but that’s two of them in a row.” Yes, true. But I wanted as much as possible to review films in the month of their original release,* and Gunga Din is far and away the best, most lasting film to come out in February, 1939. And since this series is about celebrating the best and most lasting films of the year, and not the weird obscurities, I am comfortable with my decision. Anyway, it’s about as far from Only Angels Have Wings as a Cary Grant adventure movie can possibly be.
